The California Supreme Court has ruled in favor of equal rights for gay and lesbian same-sex couples. It is important to note, though, that the ruling specifically says that the government does not have to give the same-sex unions the title of "marriage" as long as it doesn't do so for heterosexual opposite-sex unions either. This allows a system by which the government grants only Civil Unions to all couples (gay and straight alike) and allows individual denominations to decide for themselves what constitutes a valid "marriage".Therefore -- if anyone is concerned that the ruling redefines an ancient pre-existing concept -- or that it would impose recognition of anything on any church -- those concerns can be set to rest.

May 21, 2008 - As an afterthought, the religious institutions that are the most pposed to same sex marriage aren't going to attract those people in the first place. Which is a shame because when two people want to share their lives and provide for each other the religious instutions should welcome them with open arms and celebrate that union.Marc

May 21, 2008 - In the end marriage, under any name, is an economic contract between two partners (and why not more.....?). Everywhere there is a separation between church (or mosque or synagogue or temple) and state it really doesn't matter what the religion wants. It is about civil law and discrimination is, or should not be, allowed. Therefore the same rights under the law must be given to couples of the opposite sex or the same sex.
